CATCHING THE TIDE – SALMON NET FISHING IN SCOTLAND is a landmark photobook which showcases Colin McPherson’s long-term photography work documenting an historic tradition which is in decline and under threat.

In a collaboration with celebrated publisher Dewi Lewis, McPherson has produced a book which represents the rich history of net fishing in Scotland through photography. This is the first time a compendium of images from McPherson’s extensive archive has been published in book form and represents the creative cornerstone of McPherson’s photographic practice spanning three decades of work on the subject.

Beginning in 1996, CATCHING THE TIDE is a visual story of a type of fishing which has been practiced for generations. Through a mix of reportage, landscape and portraiture, the book introduces us to the men who brought wild Atlantic salmon to customers and clients at home and abroad using traditional fishing methods in Scotland’s rivers and estuaries. With the industry now having almost vanished, this book celebrates a way of life which is woven into the fabric of our coastal communities.

The photography from the project has been exhibited and reproduced in newspapers and magazines worldwide and prints are held by a number of prestigious collections.
